If you live somewhere under the Brisbane Airport flight path, you might have noticed that planes coming into land after dark turn on the super bright headlights as they turn onto their final approach (somewhere down near Algester). It has got me wondering what purpose those lights serve? I can’t imagine that they cast much light on the airstrip itself from that far away, and I suppose that the airfield itself is lit up pretty well in any case. And if it’s just to improve visibility of the plane as it comes into land, why aren’t radar and the regular navigational lights sufficient? Does anyone have experience with aircraft movements and know why the lights? submitted by /u/hU0N5000 [link] [comments]
