The religious leader of Australia’s oldest mosque has slammed acts of terrorism done in the name of Islam, describing the perpetrators as sick people in need of help. Imam Uzair Akbar from Brisbane’s century-old Holland Park Mosque says some people have hijacked Islam and given it a sinister interpretation. He’s used a Ramadan event to call for a unified approach to dealing with extremists, saying that shunning people doesn’t work. The Imam has also issued an open invitation to critics of his faith, like politician Pauline Hanson, to attend the mosque and learn about Islam.
