Lou Richards had a trick shot. Somehow, he could drop-kick a footy with his right foot, but around his back, so that it emerged from the left side of his body. It is as hard to describe this sleight-of-foot now as it was to execute then. I saw dozens of schoolboys fall over in the effort to copy him. As a young reporter, too cool for school, I didn’t try in front of them. But I don’t know how many times I tripped over trying to replicate it later in my back yard.
